Teen Dating Violence Doesn't Discriminate

Myths about GLBT Teens:

  • Being GLBT is just a phase
  • There aren't many GLBT teens
  • GLBT teens are sick or immoral

Myths about dating violence:

  • Violence doesn't happen in the GLBT community
  • When same-sex violence occurs it's an equal or fair fight
  • The law does not protect GLBT people from dating violence
  • There are no resources for GLBT teens

Healthy Relationships Include
Responsibility, hard work, pleasure, commitment, caring, honesty, trust, communication, sharing, compromising, closeness, recognizing differences, vulnerability, openness, respect, friendships, strong feelings, talking about sex and intimacy.

 

Abusive Relationships Include
Jealousy, possessiveness, pain, violence, obsession, cruelty, giving up yourself, intimidation, refusing to practice safe sex, fear, threats, proving yourself, manipulation, expecting all your needs to be met, pressuring for sex, outing you without permission.

 

 

 

If You're In an Abusive Relationship

  • No matter what your abuser says, it's not your fault.
  • You're not alone.  There are people willing to help you.
  • Trust your gut.  If you feel you're in danger, leave.
  • Being GLBT doesn't mean you deserve the abuse
  • If your' confused, call us and we can help you figure it out.

How to help a friend

  • Listen and support your friend
  • Help them identify options
  • Let them be in control of who knows about the abuse as well as who knows about their sexual orientation.
  • Refer them to our hotline number if they have questions or need support (or if you need support in helping them).

Womansplace Crisis Center Services

Womansplace provides support, counseling and assistance for survivors of sexual assault and/or domestic violence.

  • CONFIDENTIALITY - All services are strictly confidential

  • COUNSELING - Individual and group counseling are available to survivors, friends, family and companions.
  • CRISIS INTERVENTION - Staff will meet with survivors and family or friends at the hospital or police station to provide support and information.
  • EMERGENCY SHELTER - We also provide emergency shelter to keep families safe from harm.  Call 508-588-2041.

All Staff Are Trained to Help Your Family

Womansplace Crisis Center's staff and volunteers are trained to help women and their children cope with the effects of rape, sexual assault and family violence.  We are experienced working with children, teenagers, adults and senior citizens.  Counselors represent different ages, sexual orientations, cultures and languages including Spanish Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole.

All services are free and confidential.
