Approximately 15,000
people receive emergency food assistance each week from a food pantry,
meal site or shelter served by
The
Food Bank of Western Massachusetts — an increase of 22 percent since
2006.
To continue to address this growing need, the Hatfield-based nonprofit
will once again host the biennial “The Food Bank Gala: Party for a
Purpose” on April 9. All proceeds from this elegant affair at the
Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, will benefit
The Food Bank which is able to provide $9 worth of food to area
residents for every $1 donated.
Nearly a dozen restaurants and several beverage vendors are
participating in this event which allows participants to indulge in
tastings of wines and foods prepared by some of the area’s top chefs.
“Each of the restaurants is very unique and we have all four counties
(in Western Massachusetts) represented,” said Megan S. Pete, director of
development and marketing for the Food Bank. “All these folks are
phenomenal, and they’re all dedicated to the issue.”
Participating restaurants and caterers include Pazzo Ristorante and
Max’s Tavern, both in Springfield, Blue Heron Restaurant & Catering in
Sunderland, Eastside Grill, Spoleto Restaurant and Bistro Les Gras, all
in Northampton, Chez Albert in Amherst, Lattitude in West Springfield,
Ollie’s downunder Bar and Grille in Shelburne Falls, Chandler’s
Restaurant in South Deerfield, and The Old Inn On The Green in New
Marlborough in the Berkshires.
Beverage vendors include Berkshire Brewing Company Inc. of South
Deerfield, Martignetti Companies in Norwood, M.S. Walker Inc. Fine Wine
& Spirits in Somerville, Pierce Brothers Coffee in Greenfield and V-One
Vodka, marketed out of Hadley.
The gala will offer guests the opportunity to try special dishes from
each of the vendors. “Most of the restaurants don’t do their typical
menu items,” Pete said. “They are things that they are able to add
more creativity to. (Guests) will be able to sample some of the finest
cuisines from the entire region.”
