Apartment!

Event Time
Saturdays and Sundays, 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Event Location
Greater Boston Area
Heading Home has more than 10 families moving out of shelters June,
but they need your help to ensure a smooth transition from the shelters
into their new apartments. Please consider volunteering your time,
resources and energy for this important and exciting cause!
What: Heading Home's "Up & Out" program assists individuals
and families who are moving into their own apartments for the first time
after being homeless. "Up & Out" raises money and household donations,
and coordinates volunteers to clean, furnish and decorate the apartment
prior to a family's move. While it is a significant undertaking, seeing
the joy and pride of the families and individuals moving into their new
homes make it absolutely worthwhile.
Who: They need team leaders willing to spearhead a move and
able volunteers willing to participate. Bring your friends and family
(children older than 10).
When: Taking place every Saturday and some Sundays in June,
moves occur from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Where: The Greater Boston Area
How: Lead a move by recruiting ten of your friends. Smaller
groups can be combined and are also encouraged. On average, soup to
nuts, each move costs approximately $2,500, depending on the size of the
family. This amount is decreased by any donations you are able to
secure. Collect or purchase either new or gently used items, ranging
from towels to cleaning supplies to sofas. Donate gift cards to purchase
house wares and other move-related items. Show up on the day of the move
to help hang curtains, clean, decorate, assemble furniture, buy
groceries, etc. Send this to friends and families you think might be
interested in helping out.
Why: Did you know the average age of homeless people in
Massachusetts is eight years old? Families are homeless on average three
years and most become homeless because of unforeseen hardships such as
caring for a parent or sick child, losing a job, domestic violence, etc.
Heading Home provides emergency shelter, housing and support services
for more than 1,500 homeless and low-income people each year.
