Hingham Eagle Scout Delivers 100 Back-to-School Backpacks
August 30, 2009
HULL, MA - More than 100 schoolchildren will start the new school
year loaded with school supplies free of charge, thanks to the
enterprising efforts of Boy Scout Rick Darst of Hingham, who donated
that many backpacks jammed with the supplies to
Wellspring Multi-Service Center
in Hull, a nonprofit that assists area families in need.
His original plan also focused on getting big chain stores to kick in
money for backpacks and materials, but only two came through, Rite Aid
and Building 19, he said. He then had 12 fellow Scouts fan out across
town and hand out fliers seeking support, and he also conducted his own
mailing to get the word out. His efforts were covered in local papers as
well, and the result was an outpouring of support in the form of cash
and school materials such as notebooks, calculators, and various other
items, that surprised and pleased him.
The backpacks were given out to families and children via a variety
of Wellspring programs, and if any are left over when the school year
gets underway, Wellspring will work with local schools to make sure they
reach the children needing them most.
